Addiction is a chronic disease that does not have a cure but can be managed. Like other diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease, addiction can be controlled through ongoing treatment and knowledge regarding warning signs of relapse symptoms. However, if treatment is not obtained and addiction is allowed to persist, it can be, and often is, fatal.
Many individuals, despite studies and research proving otherwise, continue to view addiction as a choice as opposed to a disease. At JourneyPure Center for Professional Excellence, we understand and accept addiction as a disease in a manner that allows us to provide the appropriate treatment to our clients. This treatment is known as chronic care, which is a form of medical care that helps maintain patient well-being by keeping the symptoms of diseases like addiction in remission, all while maintaining a high quality of life.
Addiction is characterized by relapse and requires longitudinal, integrated care from a multidisciplinary team of medical and psychiatric professionals. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, chronic disease management can be described as follows:
“A patient-centered model of care that involves longitudinal care delivery; integrated and coordinated primary medical and specialty care; patient and clinician education; explicit evidence-based care plans; and expert care availability. The model, incorporating mental health and specialty addiction care, holds promise for improving care for patients with substance dependence who often receive no care of fragmented ineffective care.”
Chronic Care at JourneyPure Center for Professional Excellence
JourneyPure Center for Professional Excellence is pleased to provide chronic care treatment through our many modalities and approaches. It is our mission to provide treatment that is effective in ways that keep each one of our clients in recovery for a lifetime. In order to do that, we follow the chronic care model.
Above all else, we offer a full curriculum of treatment as opposed to “fragmented care” in an effort to give each client the best chance of recovery possible. We provide detox services for those who are struggling with physical dependence so that they can clear their minds and bodies of toxic substances prior to beginning more therapeutic, spiritual work. Detoxing and then continuing on with care is our expectation, as we are not simply a detox center.
Then, we apply evidence-based treatments to each one of our clients’ based on their specific treatment needs. For all patients, we include individual, group, and family therapy into their plans. Studies show that there are significant benefits to treating the chronic disease of addiction with a combination of these three therapies. For starters, individual therapy can help a client learn how to get in touch with himself or herself in a way that encourages him or her to continually take personal inventory, work through any bumps in the road, and keep striving to maintain recovery. Group therapy can offer clients a bond with other individuals who are experiencing addiction, too, so that a support network can be built and relied on. And, when the family is involved in family therapy, clients are less inclined to relapse, as those around him or her are aware of how the disease of addiction can affect their loved one.
To help further support our clients through the chronic care model, we ensure that we have plenty of trained and certified medical and psychiatric professionals on our staff. We also make it so these professionals are available to clients not only when they are in treatment with us, but also after buy providing clients with a recovery coach.
Like a disease such as cancer, those who have an addiction must continue to receive care in order to best treat their disease. That is why we at JourneyPure Center for Professional Excellence provide all clients with a continuing care plan. Through this plan, we offer recommendations for patients to follow, such as attending 12-Step meetings or other support groups that are local to them, seeing a therapist to continually support good mental health, and take care of their physical well-being by eating right, sleeping well, and exercising often.
